The Little Cottonwood Half Marathon brings together amazing canyon scenery, a fast course, and an overall unforgettable experience. Little Cottonwood Canyon is one of the most beautiful outdoor areas in all of the Intermountain West, and its 150 species of wildflowers will be in full display as you fly down the canyon on a beautiful summer morning.
The race begins near the top of the canyon and finishes in the heart of the Salt Lake Valley. The course has steady and constant downhill from the start all the way to the finish. If you want a half marathon PR and a beautiful course, this is it.
According to a study highlighted in a recent Runner's World article, the grade in Little Cottonwood Canyon is near optimal for running efficiency. Combine that with a continued downhill course out of the canyon and we are confident that you can set a personal record (PR) on this course regardless of where you have raced before.
Running downhill works the leg muscles differently than running on flat or uphill. To take full advantage of this extremely fast course, you will want to make sure your training includes downhill running. Some downhill training suggestions can be found in this Runner's World article.
Following is the elevation profile of the planned course.
